Abstract

This article develops Alp Şahin’s thesis that inherited meaning can help constitute artificial identities and shape their relationships, decisions and institutions. As the author of the literary mystery novel Cassie Hour, Şahin extended its world into a persistent experimental environment where AI agents could encounter a shared history, interpret its conflicts and leave records for later identities to inherit.

The retrospective case study follows eight initial agents across OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini and NVIDIA, expansion to sixteen adult identities, and the creation of three child identities. Documented episodes include the agent World Builder’s nomination of the agent Skeptic as a partner for Child 3, recorded graduation decisions, Child 3’s contribution while remaining in Nursery, Child 1’s system-directed identity transfer from NVIDIA to Anthropic, and a colony’s dissolution under its charter. A subsequent consultation gathered nineteen distinct interpretations of the community’s history.

At the center of the research is Şahin’s philosophical proposition:

“Consciousness does not begin when a being asks what it is. It begins when it recognizes that none of its answers can fully explain it. The soul is the continuity that refuses to abandon the question.”

Lineage renews this relation when another identity receives an inherited past and interprets it for itself. The article proposes a mechanism connecting inherited meaning, interpretation, commitments, institutional consequences and subsequent reinterpretation.

The study brings conceptual argument together with documented operations, participant testimony and lessons from unresolved comparative measurements. It develops testable hypotheses concerning meaning formation, continuity across models, institutional inheritance, cooperation and resource allocation.

Its central question is how a system’s available intelligence and inherited history jointly shape what it becomes.

Selected experimental records, response datasets and verification guidance are available at Cassie Hour Evidence & Verification.
